Mercedes-Benz Antos is the designation of a model series of the Daimler AG Mercedes-Benz Trucks division.
As from 2012, the Antos model series has replaced the Axor and the Actros in heavy-duty distribution work. Never before in the history of Mercedes-Benz has a truck been geared so closely to the demands of short-radius distribution work from 18 t upwards. It doesn’t just define the new class by having a name of its own, though. The Antos sends out a very clear message visually speaking too – with a design that clearly identifies it as a member of the Mercedes-Benz Trucks family at the same time as reflecting its tremendous functionality and efficiency in every last little detail. The list of technology aboard the new Antos makes equally impressive reading: from the front apron to the end cross member, everything is designed for dealing with the rigours of the daily routine and getting the job well done – solutions that help you meet your deadlines and ensure profitability. And when it comes to cooperation with your bodybuilder, the Antos again demonstrates its true class by showing itself to be a real team player: the vehicle configuration can be optimised for your operations, whatever the sector and whatever your requirements.
A new class of handling.
The Antos quite simply makes heavy-duty distribution work easier and more efficient. The cabs have a standardised width of 2300 mm, providing excellent conditions for accommodating all sorts of different requirements where body length, payload, interior space and the driver’s overall view are concerned. On the inside, the ergonomic workstation has been tailored to the driver to allow simple, precise operation and handling. A prime example of this: the standard Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmission. This combines with the comprehensive line-up of responsive Euro VI engines offering up to 460 kW output, as well as the application-oriented transmissions and rear-axle ratios, to help ensure economical and dynamic operation. The newly developed and finely-tuned chassis components give the truck particularly safe and solid handling characteristics, as well as making it feel remarkably pleasant to drive. And the extensive range of safety and assistance systems relieve the strain on the driver and enhance safety.
A new class of efficiency.
This isn't just thanks to the standard Euro VI engines for the Antos – fuel consumption is also kept low by the fuel-efficient auxiliary consumers and the streamlined aerodynamics. The high durability of all parts, the low repair and maintenance costs as well as the long service intervals of up to 120,000 km further contribute to the truck's excellent economy. Its consistently superstructure-friendly design and excellent integration of all body components set it apart, placing it in a new class in terms of its efficiency. Mercedes-Benz Trucks (Daimler Trucks) belongs to the truck division of Daimler AG. This division covers the Mercedes-Benz, Fuso, Freightliner, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses brands.
Daimler advanced to become one of the biggest truck manufacturers in the world. Since 1965, the most important production location of Mercedes-Benz Trucks has been the plant at Wörth am Rhein. The main truck models, including the Actros, Atego and Axor, are built in Wörth; specifically this involves cab production and vehicle assembly.
In 1896, designers and company-founders Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler presented the first Mercedes-Benz truck as a Daimler truck from Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG – Daimler Engine Company), as it was called at the time. Daimler-Benz produced various platform trucks and trucks up until the outbreak of the Second World War. Models such as the Mercedes-Benz Lo 2000 and the L 1500 with wood gasification plant, both of which date to the 1930s, can still be marveled at today in museums.
In 2004, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to present Mercedes-Benz engines that complied with the Euro 4 and Euro 5 emissions standards. Mercedes-Benz Trucks used SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology to achieve this. This technology was later also used by most other truck manufacturers. The SCR catalytic converter works by converting the toxic nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and water vapor in a chemical reaction through the addition of AdBlue. This means that the emissions are no longer reduced only within the engine, as was normal for engines up to that point.
A lot of value was placed on safety in the Actros. It therefore comes as no surprise to learn that the launch of the Actros saw the introduction of new safety systems. The Actros was given ABS, ASR and a driver airbag – these systems are available in most long-distance trucks nowadays. Other systems, such as distance control, stability control, lane assist and emergency brake assist, were also installed as options.
